Furniture Flip: Vintage Bed

A trend that has picked up speed over the years is white furniture.

This is of course not good news for brown furniture.

And since most furniture is brown and made of wood, this is therefore not good news for most furniture.

While white furniture is still very popular, one could argue that painted furniture in general is doing better than its counterpart: brown.

At a recent estate sale, I noticed this beautiful bed had not even been looked at by buyers.

  • The style was attractive.

  • The size was common (a full).

  • The quality was high.

So what was it that made buyers pass by?

It could have been that it was still brown. It could have been the wear from age and use.

We decided to buy it and bring it home to give it a flip. I wanted to test my hypothesis that white furniture was more desirable than brown.

Once home, I drove to the local antique mall and bought another jar of mineral paint by Fusion. Color: Raw Silk.

We set up the bed outside and I proceeded to give it a makeover.

One coat of paint then another. Three in total. The dings and knicks and scratches were less noticeable. The acorn style posters really popped.

I decided to leave the finish matte rather than adding a coat of poly or wax. I prefer the matte look but it will scratch and ding over time.

What do you think? Would you vote for brown or white?
